People like me

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Thanks to ATLmalcontent for this one.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a blog which better describes my friends, family, and me. It’s funny because it’s true. And now my non-white friend can understand why white people love Apple, indie music, home rennovation, and microbrews thanks to Stuff White People Like.

Weekend plans

Friday, February 8th, 2008

After pulling nearly a 60 hours week, here are my weekend plans:

  • Friday night - sleep
  • Saturday - play with the family
  • Saturday night - drink massive quantities of good, high gravity beer with friends
  • Sunday - stumble into church (it’s good to be Pesbyterian!)
  • Sunday night - sleep

Have a great weekend everyone. Here’s hoping your week wasn’t as stressful as mine.

And then I heard about Gary

Friday, January 11th, 2008

From the time she heard about the Meredith Emerson case, she’s been pretty freaked out about it, and rightfully so. Meredith Emerson was a young, athletic, and strong woman who knew how to defend herself. She was in her environment when she was killed, and it’s the same kind of environment that my wife feels very comfortable in - the north Georgia mountains.

While on her way home last night my wife stopped to talk to a neighbor. They talked about the holidays and how crazy they were, and the neighbor then said “And then I heard about Gary.” “Huh?” We had been told that Gary Hilton lived near our old house and that he was apprehended at a nearby gas station, but it really drove things home when she realized that he hung out in our neighborhood. It’s strange when you neighbors are interviewed by the GBI for a murder that took place 100 miles away. What’s more scary is that there’s nothing demographically that makes him more likely to live in the Chamblee area than in East Cobb or Gwinett. In some ways it would be easier if there was something more unusual about him; let’s just be blunt, if he were black or latino or talked to the voices in his head, then we all might feel a little more comfortable. But instead he’s just a neighbor who made what appeared to be idle threats to people who didn’t keep their dogs on a leash. It really sucks to fully understand that we could be walking alongside a murderer (someone who has probably already killed once and will kill again) and not even know it.

Old Friends

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

A few weeks ago an email from a friend I haven’t talked to in high school. My first reaction was “cool” and my second one was “how the hell did he find me?” Turns out he did a short stint in the CIA, so it’s not surprising that he was able to hunt me down. He’s now a lobbyist, and he was in town this week, so we got together for breakfast with another long lost friend.

It’s really cool to see old friends for the first time in 16 years. Someone said that when you go to a reunion in your 30s it’s to impress people, and when you go in your 40s it’s to see old friends, so it was good to just see the old friends without the whole reunion mess and the lame attempts to show off. We just reminisced about the old days, caught up on where we are now, and talked about how sad it was that the school’s president just took a dive out a window.

I’ve always been bad at keeping up relationships, but as I reunite with old friends more, I realize what a shame that is. Maybe I’ll try to do a better job of that this year.
